Coordinated responses

Cards (3)

  • Coordinated response= the nervous system and endocrine systems work together to detect and respond to stimuli.
  • Fight or flight response
    1. The hypothalamus communicates with the sympathetic nervous and adrenal-cortical system.
    2. The sympathetic nervous system sends impulses to glands and smooth muscle and tells adrenal medulla to release adrenaline and noradrenaline into the bloodstream.
    3. The hypothalamus also activates adrenal-cortical system by releasing CRF.
    4. The pituitary gland secretes hormone ACTH.
    5. ACTH arrives at adrenal cortex and releases approximately 30 hormones.
  • Action of adrenaline
    • When adrenaline binds to its receptor, the enzyme adenylyl cyclase is activated.
    • Adenylyl cyclase triggers the conversion of ATP into cAMP.
    • This activates enzymes called protein kinases.
    • This triggers the conversion of glycogen into glucose= glycogenolysis.
