Moore intuitionism

Cards (5)

  • what is Moore's intuitionism?

he believed we don't recognise goodness through empirical facts; th good is self-evident to our intuition
  • how did naturalism make the key error of naturalistic fallacy?

for any natural property- FE, pleasure- we can still ask the question, is pleasure good?, the fact it is possible to answer no shows that pleasure (and any other properties) are not the same as good.
  • what analogy did he use?

the colour yellow- if we were asked to describe the colour yellow or present an argument based on the colour yellow we would find it difficult. we only answer questions of 'what is yellow?' by pointing to the object that is yellow. we are similarly able to recognise goodness as it cannot be defined but it can be shown and known
  • what did he explain was the difference between simple and complex ideas?

complex ideas e.g a horse are ideas that can be broken down into parts: the legs, the neck etc. simple ideas such as the colour yellow, cannot be divided into parts. Moore states that goodness is a simple idea and are grasped by intuition
  • what is intuitionism believe about right and wrong?

they are not dependent on our personal intuition or feelings. the 'good' is a real thing and we are able to intuitively recognise it.
