The oesophagus is our digestive system and the trachea is our respiratory system
The pharynx is where the back of the nose and mouth meet up
The larynx, AKA voicebox is surrounded by rings of cartilage
The trachea is also known as the windpipe
Air travels down the trachea before it reaches the lungs
Lungs are the organ where gas exchange takes place
Lungs are covered with a thin membrane called pleura
The left and right bronchus are at the end of the trachea. These send air into the lungs.
Each bronchus divides into smaller paths called the bronchioles
Alveoli are the sacs at the end of bronchioles.
Alveoli are covered in capillaries, where gas exchange takes place
Gas exchange is oxygen for carbon dioxide
When our diaphragm relaxes, air comes into our lungs
When our diaphragm contracts, air gets pushed out
Gas exchange: Red blood cells go into your capillaries, carbon dioxide (waste) gets pushed out of the body through alveoli, and the alveoli pushes oxygen into your bloodstream
