  • The Civil war in Lebanon was problematic for the UN
    • UN peacekeeping forces could only be asked in with agreement of all parties involved, and they had to remain neutral. This was difficult because it was a civil war and the people were divided against themselves.
Not everyone in Lebanon wanted peacekeeping forces there.
    • There were different Muslim and Christian militia groups and commanders, as well as the PLO, so working with those involved to keep peace would be complicated.
  • Syria and Israel also became involved with Lebanon and as they were not on friendly terms with themselves there was a possibility for Civil War to become more serious if it was not dealt with correctly.
  • The UN's response displayed that like the League of Nations, it had troubles with favouring countries over others.
Israel responds badly to the UN because they are seen to favour Palestine.
    • So the UN held little political power
