      165 Romanian orphans adopted in Britain

      to test to what extent good care could make up for poor early experiences in institutionalisation
    • What was done?
      The Romanian orphans were tested an ages 4,6,11,15 and 22 for their physical, intellectual and emotional development.
      A control group of British children was used to compare the results, and parental and teacher interviews gathered results
    • what were the findings?
      when children first arrivedin UK, showed signs of delayed intellectual development.
      by 11, children who were adopted before 6 months showed average IQ of 102, those adopted after 6 months had IQ of 86. (normal is 116).
      also, those adopted after 6 months showed disinhibited attachment. the symptoms were clinginess, attention seeking. those adopted before 6 months rarely showed this attachment.
    • so, what are the effects of institutionalisation?
      the longer a child is institionalised for, the greater the effects are negatively.
      IQ is lower, disinhibition attachment, relationship problems, characteristics of autism.
