Placenta

• Placenta has numerous finger-like villi made up partly of embryonic tissue and partly of uterine wall (maternal tissue).
• The villi consist of maternal and embryonic blood capillary systems which are very closely associated, allowing easy diffusion of oxygen, nutrients and antibodies to the embryo and metabolic wastes from the embryo.
• The placenta also secretes hormones.
