  • The organisms and the Enviorment
Basic Definitions:Species: a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Oak trees, squirrels, foxes are all species.Habitat: the environment in which a species normally lives or the location of a living organismPopulation: a group of organisms of the same species who live in the same area at the same timeCommunity: a group of populations living and interacting with each other in an areaEcosystem: a community and its non-living environmentEcology: the study of relationships between living organisms and between organisms and their environment
  • Ecosystem
Ecosystems contain a variety of organism each of which is interdependent on the others to maintain the system.
  • Organisms within the ecosystem
Producers usually plants which are ultimately the source of food for other organisms.Consumers these are mainly herbivores (animals that eat plants) and carnivores (animals that eat other animals).Decomposers; organisms that decompose dead matter, thus recycling it ultimately back into the food chain.
  • Habitats
Every ecosystem will contain a range of habitats. Habitats are small parts of ecosystems where a specific organism or more likely groups of organisms live.
  • Population
The population of a given area, of a particular species that are living in an ecosystem at a particular time
  • Community
This is the total number of all species within a given ecosystem
  • Feeding Relationships
Almost all organisms within any habitat or ecosystem can be considered food for something
  • Biomass
Biomass is the mass of living tissue at each stage of a food chain. A food chain is the movement of energy from one source to another
