stage 1 - glycolysis

• takes place in the cytosol
• this stage does not require oxygen to occur - it is anaerobic
• because this stage is anaerobic it releases very little energy
• glucose converted into two 3-carbon molecules called pyruvic acid
• S ADPs convert into 2 ATPs
• When glucose is broken down into 2 pyruvic acids,4 high energy electrons and 2 protons are released. These are trapped by 2 NAD+ and converted into 2 NADH
