The number of
protons
is
equal
to the
atomic number.
An atom with an
unpaired
electron will be
attracted
by another atom that has an
unpaired electron
, resulting in
ionic bonds
forming between them.
When atoms
lose
electrons they become
positively charged ions
(
cations
) and when atoms
gain
electrons they become
negatively charged
ions (anions).
Atoms
are more
stable
with a
full outer shell
of
electrons
An ion is a
charged particle
that has
gained
or
lost electrons.
Ionic compounds
have
regular
structures (
giant ionic lattices
)
in which there are
strong electrostatic forces
of attraction in all directions between
oppositely charged ions.
Metal
- An element which
loses
electrons to form
positive
ions
Non metal
An element which
gains electrons
to form
negative ions
Ionic bond
- A bond formed by the
electrostatic attraction
of
oppositely charged
ion
Electrostatic
- The force between a
positive
and
negative
charge.
