what is used with PET in oncology?
18F-FDG
why is 18F-FDG effective in assessing cancer cells?
18F-FDG is a glucose analog, therefore it’s taken up by high glucose using cells such as cancer cells and i’s not able to move out of the cell until radioactive decay.
how are patients prepped for 18F-FDG/PET?
non-fat dinner the evening before examination
fasting 6h before administration of RF
limited carbohydrate diet for 24h before test
no hard exercises or manual work 1-2 days before examination
anti-allergic preparation before administration of iodinated contrast media if needed
glycemia (blood glucose level) has to be stabilized before injection
how are diabetic patients prepped for 18F-FDG/PET?
give insulin in usual doses after arriving
blood examination is performed (If blood glucose is > 11mmol/L, the examination is cancelled)
oral load of 50g of sugar per 50min, then determination of blood glucose after 60min and then administer insulin
what is the procedure for 18F-FDG/PET?
IV administration of 18F-FDG (200-300 MBq)
Topogram – examination of torso
Spiral CT
PET
what tumors are exceptions to 18F-FDG and what Rf are used?
