Definite (the)

• When the person or thing is known because it was mentioned BEFORE
• When the object is present, both speakers know what they r talking about, or the place is a familiar one: I'm going to the bank (common place)
• To talk about specific things (singular/plural): The pencils that I bought yesterday were on sale
• To express a GROUP of people in a CATEGOR
• When there is one of a kind or one in context: Look at the moon
• When referring to a system o service: I heard that news on the radio
• With singular countable nouns meaning 'the whole class of things': The wheel was a revolutionary invention
• With specific proper names: The United States.
