Molecular Ions

Cards (6)

  • Molecular ions, or compound ions join together and plus an extra electron, or missing electron.
  • Hydroxide = OH
    Nitrate = NO3
    Carbonate = CO32-
    Sulfate = SO42-
    Phosphate = PO43-
    Ammonium = NH4+
  • If it ends in -ate, there is oxygen in the ion.
  • When naming an ionic compound, the metal always comes first and the name of the non-metal second:
    Nonmetal ending changes to ide
    Oxygen - oxide
    Nitrogen - nitride

    Sodium + chlorine - sodium chloride
    Lithium + bromine - lithium bromide
    Potassium + iodine - potassium iodine
    Sodium + hydrogen + oxygen - sodium hydroxide
    Zinc + carbon + oxygen - zinc carbonate
    Potassium + chlorine + oxygen - potassium chlorate
    Sodium + phosphate + oxygen - sodium phosphate
  • Oxygen makes it end in -ate, except for when with hydrogen
  • Formula of an ionic compound:
    Calcium Chloride  -
    1)Write atoms – Ca, Cl
    2)Write ion – Ca2+, Cl1-
    3)Swap and Drop – Ca1+, Cl2-
    4)Simplify – CaCl2
