  • The fulcrum is the point of movement, generally at the centre of a joint
  • The load is the body's weight or an external object. This will move as a result of the effort on the lever
  • The effort is a muscular force that moves the load

  • 1st class levers:
    • Fulcrum is in the middle
    • Sporting example: shooting in netball
    • Occurs at the neck joint when you are raising your head
  • 2nd class levers:
    • Load is in the middle
    • Sporting example: plantar flexion - ballet, sprinting
    • Occurs at the ankle joint
  • 3rd class lever:
    • Effort is in the middle
    • Sporting example: lifting a weight during a bicep curl
    • Occurs at the elbow joint
