  • Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015
    Public Bills - these involve matters of public policy affecting the whole country or a large section of it. Most government Bills are in this category.
  • Abortion Act 1967
    Private Members' Bills - these give an opportunity to individual MPs who are not part of the government to introduce a Bill.
  • University College London Act 1996
    Private Bills - these are designed to create a law which will affect only individual people or corporations. They do not affect the whole community.

    Orders in council - making law in times of national emergency when Parliament is not sitting - fuel crisis in the early 2000s.
  • Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
    Orders in council - can be used to amend or update existing law - Cannabis was changed to class C then five years later to Class B.

    Statutory instruments - gives the power to a government minister to make annual updates to the minimum wage as required.
  • Transport Act 2000
    By-laws - South Western Railway can make technical by-laws affecting their network.
  • Fire Brigades Union Case (1995)

    Substantive ultra vires - government minister lacked the power to make changes to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme.
  • Aylesbury Mushrooms Case (1972)

    Procedural ultra vires - Minister of Labour failed to consult Mushroom Growers' Association over establishing a new training board. Delegated legislation was void.
  • Wednesbury Case (1948)

    Unreasonable - Cinema was granted a licence to open on Sundays subject to the condition that no children under 15 shall be admitted by an adult or not. DL declared void.
