Purposive Communication Prelims

• Size of Receiver:

  • Intrapersonal Communication: communicating with yourself, feedback not felt
  • Interpersonal Communication: talking to others in an informal setting
  • Small Group Communication: 3-5 members, more structured message, solve a problem/project
  • Public Communication: public-speaking, delivering speeches, conferences, forums, relays information to a large audience, uses visual aids
  • Mass Communication: media is involved, transmitting message through various platforms, audience is anonymous

  • Verbal Communication: use of words, oral/written communication
  • Oral Communication: spoken, deals with pitch, enunciation, pauses, tone, modulating voices, pronunciation
  • Written Communication: written symbols, academic writing, mechanics to follow to address a client
