Give way to pedestrians

Cards (21)

  • Some pedestrians may actually look in the wrong direction when crossing the roads. This might be because they are used to cars coming from the right side of the road instead of the left side.
  • The rate of pedestrian fatalities in Dubai is high.
  • As a road user, pedestrians must obey the pedestrian traffic signals.
As a driver, you need to watch out if pedestrians do not obey the traffic signals.
Be careful of pedestrians who try to beat the traffic signals and cross when it is not safe for them to do so.
  • When turning left or right at any intersection, you must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road you are turning into.
  • You must give way to pedestrians using a crossing on a slip lane
  • Look carefully to see whether there is a pedestrian about to step on the crossing or waiting to cross. It is important to look early so that if necessary you can give drivers behind you plenty of warning that you are about to stop. Use hazard lights if necessary
  • If a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you must stop and give way. Proper scanning helps reduce crashes.
  • When the road is clear, turn just left of the centre of the intersection. Be careful and keep scanning for hazards
  • On-coming traffic making a left turn may be blocking your view of other traffic coming through the intersection if you are also making a left turn.
Make sure that the road is clear before you complete the turn.
You must also give way to pedestrians crossing the road that you are turning into.
  • Intersections should be designed to accomodate safe pedestrian crossings using tight curb radii, shorter crossing distances and other tools as described.
  • While right-turn slip lanes are generally a negative facility from the pedestrian perspective due to the emphasis on easy and fast vehicle travel, they can be designed to be less problematic,
  • At many arterial street intersections, pedestrians have difficulty crossing due to right turn movements and wide crossing distances.
  • Well-designed right-turn slip lanes provide pedestrian crossing islands within the intersection and a right-turn lane that is designed to optimise the right-turn motorist's view of the pedestrian and vehicles to their left. Pedestrians can cross the right-turn lane and wait on the refuge island for their walk signal.
  • Different kinds of pedestrians:
    • children
    • young people
    • aged people
    • handicapped
  • Pedestrian's behaviour:
  • Pedestrian's behaviour:
    • they do not think that the driver might not be able to see them
    • they assume that the drivers will reduce their speed or avoid hitting them
    • they frequently cross the road carelessly when there is less traffic of cars or congested
    • there are cases where they jump onto the road where the speed of the approaching car is unable to determine
    • they may not fully understand that a car needs some distance to stop
  • Bus driver's have large blind spot areas in their left and right side, directly behind the truck for quite a distance
  • If you cannot see the truck driver in the truck's mirror, then the truck driver cannot see you and immediately in front of the truck
  • Never frighten animals by using horn, lights, and reviving of engine
  • Warn other road users about the danger by switching on hazard lights
  • Slow down when you see animal hazard signs and watch out for animals on the road. Leave as much space as possible to allow for their unexpected movements
