The Endocrine System regulates, coordinates, and controls:
Growth and development
Male and female development
How your body uses energy
Levels of salts and sugars in your blood
The amount (volume) of fluid in your body
How do you think the Endocrine Glands get their jobs done?
• The answer is Hormones!
Hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted (released) from glands into the blood and affect cells in another part of the body.
Structure and Function
Homeostasis exists when there is a balance of substances. Endocrine conditions are due to either hypo (too little) or hyper (too much) secretions of substances (hormones).
The Ovaries produce eggs cells for fertilization and they make the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
The Testes is a production and storage of sperm and also produces testosterone.
Adrenal Gland located on the top of the kidneys produces adrenaline. It plays a role during emergencies situations.
The pancreas is located behind the stomach that produces insulin and glucagon. It plays a big role in digestion and in regulating blood.
The thyroid gland is located in the neck and produces thyroxine. Uses energy called metabolism.
The pituitary gland is the master gland of the endocrine system.
Responsible for growth of bones and other tissues. It produces growth hormone, prolactin, oxytocin, and endorphins.
