intense emotions

Cards (17)

  • Ibsen introduces this play with the love between Nora and Torvald and ends it with the transformation of both individuals full of contrasting emotions
  • Helmer thought Nora threatened his image by breaking the law due to which his reputation in society would jeopardised and he could lose his promotion; the second being her undermining his sense of self – worth by helping him. The emotions of rage and shock had taken over Torvald and had made him insult and criticize Nora
  • fear took over helmer which caused him to panic after he discovered the letter and thus he insulted and criticized her. The fear gave birth to a new emotion, anger, which was hardly seen at all in the play. If he wasn’t angry then Torvald would have done something much more reasonable than what he had done
  • At the start, Nora seems completely happy. She responds affectionately to Torvald’s teasing, speaks with excitement about the extra money his new job will provide, and takes pleasure in the company of her children and friends. She does not seem to mind her doll-like existence, in which she is coddled, pampered, and patronized
  • She defies Torvald in small yet meaningful ways—by eating macaroons and then lying to him about it, for instance. She also swears, apparently just for the pleasure she derives from minor rebellion against societal standards. As the drama unfolds, and as Nora’s awareness of the truth about her life grows, her need for rebellion escalates, culminating in her walking out on her husband and children to find independence.
  • Helmer's reaction being so intense is the reason why she leaves
  • Passionate love between K and ML is a result of the conflict between the two.
  • Love is created through anger from Krogstad as he tries to find out why ML left him
  • "I'll get him in the right mood" Nora when talking about getting ML a job at Helmers work
  • "I forgive you this anxiety. Though it be a bit of an insult to me" Helmer when Nora asks for Krogstad to stay on working after Helmer dismissed him
  • "Frightened little eyes" Helmer telling Nora to stop worrying after he dismissed K
  • "You look as though you'd seen a ghost" ML talking to Nora after K has just put letter in letterbox
  • "Thirty-one hours to live" Nora planning out her suicide
  • "I am afraid of nothing - with you" passionate love between ML and K
  • "Wretched woman" Insulting Nora after seeing letter
  • "In a moment of excitement. Surely you don't think I meant it seriously?" Helmer gaslighting and manipulating Nora to believe he wasn't angry at her
  • "I almost believe you're out of your mind" Helmer after Nora says she is leaving, not allowed to feel emotions
