SC1- States of matter

Cards (22)

  • What are the 3 states of matter?
    Solid, liquid, gas
  • What are the forces of attraction like in a solid?
    Strong
  • What are the forces of attraction in a liquid?
    Weak
  • What are the forces of attraction in a gas?
    Very weak
  • What is the pattern in a solid?
Particles are close together in a regular pattern
  • What is the pattern in a liquid?
Particles are close but in a random order
  • What is the pattern in the gas?
Particles are far apart in a random order
  • What is the movement of solids?
    Vibrate about fixed position
  • What is the movement of liquid?
    Particles move around each other
  • What is the movement of gases?
    Fast in all directions
  • What is the relative energy of solids?
    Least stored energy in particles
  • What is the relative energy of gases?
    Most stored energy in particles
  • What is the volume of solids?
    Definite shape and volume
  • What is the volume of liquids?
Definite volume but shape can change for the container
  • What is the volume of gases?
Dont keep a definite shape or volume, but always fill a container
  • What is the process of a solid going to a gas?
    Sublimation
  • What is the process of a gas to a solid?
    Desublimation
  • What is particle theory?
Considering each particle as a small, solid, inelastic sphere
  • Problems with particle model
-Particles arent solid, inelastic, or spheres
-model doesnt include details of forces between particles (how strong they are or how many bonds)
  • When particles get more energy they can expand if the container is expandable. Or if the container is fixed, the pressure will increase
  • Gas —> Liquid
Gas wont have enough energy to overcome forces of attraction, so bonds will start to form
  • Liquid —> Solid
Liquid wont have enough energy to overcome forces of attraction and even more bonds form, fixing particles in place
