  • Onset and rime
    The “onset” is the initial phonological unit of any word (e.g. /c/ in cat) and the term “rime” refers to the string of letters that follow, usually a vowel and final consonants

    • EX: the verb ‘go’ is irregular because the past tense is ‘went’, not ‘goed’.

    EX: adding ‘-ly’ to an adjective makes the word an adverb as in quick’- quick’ly’.
  • Assimilation
    • incorporates a new concept into an existing conceptual schema.
    • Ex: different coloured cows still have four legs, tail, eat grass, say “moo”, even though it is a different colour.
  • Accommodation
    • changes a cognitive structure or schema to incorporate the new concept.
    • Ex: a child calls a new animal a cow, even though it is a horse. The child realises that a horse and cow are animals and four-legged animals, but they are not the same animal.
