  • The Muslim Sisters of Éire are a group of Muslim women who volunteer their time to support to individuals/families experiencing homelessness. 
    By them doing this they’re expressing their religious belief and practice the five pillars of Islam.Zakat is one of the 5 pillars,this means giving 2.5% of their income to charity. They uphold this belief by Providing meals for people every Friday outside of GPO. Through them giving back to the community they’re breaking the stereotypes about Muslim women.

    Muslims believe that when they do this that they’re purified and their sins are forgiven by Allah. The word Zakat means purification.
  • Peter McVerry he is a religious person that responded to the issue of homelessness, as he set up a charity called Peter McVerry Trust which runs 20 homeless hostels and over 250 apartment. He also set up a hostel for homeless boys aged 12-16. Peter McVerry puts emphasis on youth homelessness.His charity upholds the message of Jesus to support those living on the margins of society and help them feel included.His life is based on the gospel value of compassion as he provided shelter for the homeless. Jesus said that when you welcome them (homeless,poor and needy) that you are welcoming him.
  • School encourages me to do charitable acts through the non uniform days that are associated with charity. For example,every Christmas my school organises fundraisers for SVP(the help the less privileged).
  • My community influences me to do charitable acts through the fundraisers organised by st Maurs (local GAA club),this encourages me to be like Jesus as I’m contributing to the lives of people who are living on the margins of society.
    • Poverty is a moral issue as it denies people from their basic human rights such as access to food, clean water, education and healthcare. I think that everyone deserves a good life without suffering and hardship.
    • Global poverty is a more issue as it depicts the unfairness in society in terms of the distribution of wealth. I believe that wealth should be spread evenly across society.
  • SVP do lots of work in the community helping those in need and on the margins:
    • SVP Charity shops, sell donated item cheaper
    • Day care centres for the Elderly and meals on wheels.
    • Fundraising and collections (food hampers and Christmas toy appeals). 
    • Operate holiday homes/breaks for families in need, social support activities and Education grants.

    • Across Ireland, over 11,000 volunteers help the charity which serves the community by fighting poverty.
    • They run drop-in centres for Homeless: Self-care, food, psychological, social, general, and mental health supports.
    • They also have social housing projects to assist families at risk of homelessness. 
  • The teachings of the five pillars addresses global poverty. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam this refers to mandatory charity donation. Zakat involves giving 2.5% of earnings to those in need; the poor orphans etc. zakat serves as a redistribution of wealth in the Muslim community as this reduces poverty. Wasn’t believed that is their responsibility to help those in need.
    • If I was working for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul I will make donations towards the housing projects.
    • I will run campaigns on the topic of homelessness to educate people on it and I will organise fundraisers so that we can establish homes for them.
    • I would also work with government organisations to create temporary accommodations for them, while the housing projects are ongoing
  • Charity is emphasised in the Islamic faith through one of the five pillars which is Zakat. This means giving 2.5% of their income to charity. Zakat is extremely important in the Islamic faith as they believe that when do you donate money to charity that they are fulfilling the will of Allah and that they are purified and their sins are forgiven. The word Zakat means purification.
