• Realism


  The modern artist must rely on direct experience and be a Realist, expressing the "heroism of modern life"
• Impressionism


  • Aims to portray the effects of experience upon the consciousness of the artist and audience rather than the objective characteristics of things or events, characterized by loose brushwork in trying to present nature in its reality
• Post-Impressionism


  A later stage of Impressionism, where artists passed through an Impressionist phase in the 1880s but became dissatisfied with the style and extended it in various directions
• Post-Impressionism


  An art movement that emerged after Impressionism, though a very important stage
• Paul Cezanne


  • One of the important names in post-impressionism
  • His goal was to "make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of Museums"
  • This can be seen in his still lifes like "Still Life with Apples"
