  Speed up a chemical reaction without being used up themselves

  A molecule that is changed in the reaction

  • Enzymes active site specifically binds to a substrate
  • Giving an enzyme the substrate complex
  • Enzyme catalyses the reaction forming the products
  • Enzyme is unchanged and available for another substance
• What affects enzymes?

  • Temperature
  • pH
• What happens to rate of reaction at temperature increases?

  
  

  More kinetic energy leading to more frequent collisions. However if temperature goes past the optimum temperature the enzymes denatures meaning the active site changes so substrate no longer fits
