hormones.

Cards (7)

  • hormones - a01 explanation.
hormones are released by the endocrine system and regulate many bodily processes such as breathing, stress and growth. they relay much slower than neurotransmitters and work longer. they work by binding to receptor proteins in target cells to change cell function to respond in a certain way. they can begin secretion as a result of other hormones or neural activity going on.
  • hormones - a01 of chosen hormones and why.
typically, psychologists like study testosterone and cortisol. this is because males are typically more aggressive and they have much more testosterone. cortisol is also looked at as it relates to stress.
  • hormones - cortisol.
cortisol is a hormone that is secreted in the adrenal glands from environmental stressors.
  • hormones - main a03 study for testosterone.
dabbs et al - found positive correlation between testosterone levels and likeliness to commit a crime. also found those who rated peers as tough, those that were highly rated had high testosterone levels.
  • hormones - main a03 study for cortisol.
barzman et al - looked at age 7-9 year old boys and found a positive correlation to the amount of cortisol they had and the number of aggressive outbursts that occurred.
  • hormones - additional cortisol study.
adelson - electrically stimulated rats hypothalamus to cause a trigger of corticosterone, part of the aggression system. but when rats had their adrenal glands removed they were not aggressive and had little corticosterone. when injected however, it triggered an activation again
  • hormones - evaluation.
s - very scientific, testable and supported by studies. w - reductionist and only look at 2 hormones, usually always blaming testosterone when there are other hormones and factors too. biological explanations are correlational meaning it doesn't show cause + effect.
