Evaluation of the approach

  • :( Reductionist + oversimplified approach
    • Simplifies complex human behaviour to the mechanics of the mind + early childhood experiences. It ignores important influences on behaviour such as effects of genetics + biochemistry
  • :( Determinist Approach
    • Freud believed that infant forces are determined by innate experiences and adult behaviour is determined by childhood experiences. Suggests we have no free will on how we behave or who we are + we are unable to change
    • Gives some people a plausible excuse for behaving unreasonably as it takes the responsibility away from the individual
  • :( Cannot be proven wrong
Falsifying theory (test to see if wrong). Difficult to test in this way
    For example:
    • Freud argued that all men have repressed homosexual tendencies. This cannot be proven wrong because if we find a man with no repressed homosexual tendencies, it will be argued that they are so repressed that the man is not aware of them
