  • Netting needle
    Usually made of wood, bamboo, metal, or plastic. Called sikwan in local dialect. Used for winding the twine, which is the basic material for weaving
  • Mesh gauge
    Usually made of wood or metal. Called agpang in local dialect. Its function is to maintain a uniform size of the mesh by pulling the twine around the outside of the gauge tightly
  • Braiding or hanging rod
    Made of wood or metal. Its function is to keep the braided net firm while the net maker is weaving

    • Hand-manipulated fishing instrument made of a running knot or noose tied to a tip of a pole. Made of woven strips of rattan or abaca
  • Scoop or bitay
    • Fishing instrument made of bamboo with slot webbings in an oval, half-coved shape, with or without a handle. Used for catching mussels
  • Cover pot or talakeb
    • Cylindrical device made of bamboo splits. Has two openings, a small one on top and a wider one at the bottom. Operated by hand to catch fish
  • Harpoon or panibat
    • Pointed instrument with barbed blades detachable from the handle. Thrown by hand or discharged from a gun
  • Handline
    • Fishing device made of a bamboo pole with a baited-barb hook. Dropped into the water and waited for the fish to bite
  • Barricades or saplad

    • Enclosure in a natural fish area with such materials as stones, mud, weeds, banana stalks, wooden trunks, etc. Prevents the fish from escaping
  • Fish corral or baklad
    • Barrier constructed with bamboo or chicken wire, set along the natural path of fish. Used to catch dalag, karpa, or hito
  • Filter net or saplad
    • Conical bag net made of sinamay or cotton netting fixed in flowing water. Used for catching fish and shrimps
  • Hoop net or saplad
    • Funnel-like net bag constructed over circular hoops. Used for catching dalag and hito
  • Lift net or salambao
    • Square or rectangular net manipulated in rivers by persons from four bamboo posts
  • Cast net or dala
    • Cone-shaped cotton netting with load weight around the base and a retrieving line connected to a special portion. Fishers cast or throw this in waist-deep water to capture fish
  • Otter trawl
    • Conical net that catches any kind of fish. Has mouths flanked on both sides by wings, which are kept open by doors acting as kits. Trawled on water to catch fish
  • Gill net or paanod
    • Curtain-like net composed of one or more rectangular nets made of fine nylon or cotton twine. Affects the capture of fish by entangling their gills
  • Form pairs. Each group will discuss and demonstrate how to use three of the different kinds of fishing gear
  • Digging blade
    Implement made of iron with a flat steel shape like a flat spoon with a sharp edge for digging soil. About 19 inches long and 5 inches wide
  • Wood posts
    Tree trunks used together with bamboo stakes to reinforce the perimeter of the pond and the breaker. Trunks of anahaw or betel nuts are usually used
  • Bamboo
    Use matured bamboo for durable railings, stakes, and battering ram or suhay
  • Nylon rope
    Used for tying nets to the bamboo railings. Rope no. 8 is the most suitable to use
  • Synthetic nets

    Made of polyethylene, nylon, or polyester. Weave no. 8 is usually used for the top and bottom parts of the perimeter
  • Wooden sliding board
    Piece of wood measuring 1 x 12 x 14 inches. Used to move the mud blocks from the source to where the dike is constructed
  • Stone sinker or bamboo pegs
    Used for securing the bottom end of the perimeter
  • Cutting tools, like bolo and saw
    Used to cut wood and bamboo materials
  • Water pumps
    Used to pump water from a water source to fill the pond with the required level of water
  • Fish pen
    Square or rectangular pen constructed in the shallow lakes. Bamboo poles or woods are used as posts, and the sides are enclosed with nets
  • Fish cage
    Cages can either be fixed or stationary and floating, depending on the depth of the water. Mesh sizes of nets vary from small to large to contain the small fry and bigger-sized fish
  • Fishpond
    A pond may be dug, and water supplies into it, or it may be a natural pond with water. It must be free from wild fish and toxic materials
  • Open-water pond

    Done in bays or seas. Bamboo poles are dug into the bed of the water. Used to cultivate mussels, clams, and oysters
  • Banca
    Made of durable wood of varying sizes. Used to bring feeds, fertilizers, and other needs in the pond, sea, or bay where fish are cultured. Also used to load the fish harvested
  • Floodlight or kerosene
    Fueled lamps used during the dark phase of the moon to hang bag net in the pond. Observe if there are enough fish in the bag net and gather the fish by raising the net
  • Secchi disc and salinometer
    Used to monitor water parameters
  • Maintenance and Facilities
    • Ponds should be cleaned immediately after harvest
    • Avoid allowing wild fish to enter the pond
    • Remove aquatic weeds and other debris inside the pond
    • Check water quality regularly
    • Maintain proper water level
    • Monitor fish health and growth
    • Provide supplemental feeding
    • Implement disease prevention and control measures
