A seizure that lasts longer than 4-5 minutes or consecutive seizures without return of consciousness between seizures (some suggest its 30 min of uninterrupted seizures)
Associated complications include aspiration, brain damage, fracture of long bones & spine
Assessment is similar to that of a pt experiencing a seizure - it is important to ask family or bystanders if any anti seizure medication was given before arrival
Management:
Manage airway, provide ventilatory support, O2
Protect pt from injury
Establish & secure IV
Consider the administration of Diazepam (Valium), Midazolam (versed), Lozarapam (ativan)
If 2 or more doses does not stop seizure, contact medical control
Pt with tonic-clonic seizures will need a different medication
