  • Status Epilepticus
    A seizure that lasts longer than 4-5 minutes or consecutive seizures without return of consciousness between seizures (some suggest its 30 min of uninterrupted seizures)
  • Associated complications include aspiration, brain damage, fracture of long bones & spine
  • Assessment is similar to that of a pt experiencing a seizure - it is important to ask family or bystanders if any anti seizure medication was given before arrival
  • Management:
    • Manage airway, provide ventilatory support, O2
    • Protect pt from injury
    • Establish & secure IV
    • Consider the administration of Diazepam (Valium), Midazolam (versed), Lozarapam (ativan)
    • If 2 or more doses does not stop seizure, contact medical control
    • Pt with tonic-clonic seizures will need a different medication
    • Pregnant pt may need Magnesium
