• an advantage of independent group design is that participants are less likely to work out the aim ,than repeated measures design, as the pp only take part in one condition, meaning reduced demand characteristics

  there also less order effects as participants take part in one condition
• a disadvantage however is independent needs to double to pps compared to repeated for the same amount of data.

  participant variables between the conditions are an issue as the pp only take part in one condition
• an advantage with RMD is it needs half the amount of pp than independent.

• disadvantage of repeated is participants are more likely to work out the aim than in independent as they take part in both conditions.

  order effect can happen as participant performance can improve or worse between the conditions due to factors such as practise or fatigue
• mpd reduces participant variables as pp are matched on a relevant characteristic

  no order effects as pp only take part in one condition

  however MPD takes longer to set up than other designs, it needs twice as many pp as a rmd

  participants are similar not identical since there may be some participant variables between conditions that influence the data
