• a suppurative infection of meninges and subarachnoid space

  bacterial meningitis
• in newborn, the most common cause for bacterial meningitis is

  Escherichia coli
• in older infants and children, majority of infections were due to

  haemophilus influenza type b
• organism that causes community-acquired meningitis in both children over 1 month of age and adults

  streptococcus pnemoniae, followed by neisseria meningitis
