Gas Tests

• To test for hydrogen gas


  1. Insert a burning splint into the test tube

  2. If present, the lighted splint will ignite with a squeaky pop
• To test for oxygen gas


  1. Insert a glowing splint into the test tube

  2. If present, the glowing splint relights
• To test for carbon dioxide gas


  1. Put the gas up for testing in a test tube

  2. Put limewater, an aqueous solution of carbon hydroxide in another test tube

  3. Inject and bubble the gas into the limewater solution using a pipette

  4. Repeat this process several times

  5. If present, the limewater will turn cloudy
• To test for chlorine


  1. Insert damp litmus paper into the solution

  2. If present, the litmus paper will be bleached white
