  • Heart Diagram:
    A) pulmonary artery
    B) aorta
    C) pulmonary vein
    D) left atrium
    E) heart valve
    F) vena cava
    G) right atrium
    H) tendons
    I) right ventricle
    J) left ventricle
  • pulmonary vein - connected to the left atrium and brings oxygenated blood back from the lungs
  • Vena Cava - connected to the right atrium and brings deoxygenated blood back from the tissues of the body
  • the atrium is where the blood first enters from the veins on each side
  • Atrioventricular valves - found between the atrium and the ventricle, allow pressure to build in the ventricles as they shut when when ventricular pressure exceeds atrial pressure
  • ventricles - pump blood out of the heart into the arteries
  • semilunar valves - found in the aorta and pulmonary artery, close when the pressure in the vessels exceeds that in the ventricle
  • pulmonary artery - connected to the right ventricle carrying deoxygenated blood to the lungs where its oxygen is replenished
  • aorta - an artery that is connected to the left ventricle and carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body except the lungs
  • the pulmonary vein is the only vein to carry oxygenated blood
  • the heart muscles receive oxygen through coronary arteries which branch off the aorta
