SPINAL CORD

Cards (7)

  • SPINAL CORD
    -          long, thin, tabular bundle of nerves and supporting cells that extend down from the brain
    the central throughway
  • SPINAL NERVES
    -          origins: anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) roots of the spinal cord
    -          function: receive sensory information from the periphery and pass them to the CNS
              -          receive motor information from the CNS and pass them to periphery
    -         clinical relations: nerve root impingement, disk protrusion, disk herniation, spinal stenosis, spinal nerve impingement
  • SPINAL NERVES: regional divisions
    -          cervical (neck) = 8 pair
    -          thoracic region = 12 pair
    -          lumbar region = 5 pair
    -          sacral region = 5 pair
    -          coccygeal region = 1 pair
  • SPINAL CORD
  • CRANIAL NERVES
    -          a set of 12 peripheral nerves emerging from the back that innervate the structures of head, neck, thorax and abdomen
    -          nerves: Olfactory nerve (CN I), optic nerve (CN II), oculomotor nerve (CN III), trochlear nerve (CN IV), trigeminal nerve (CN V), abducens nerve (CN VI), facial nerve (CN VII), vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII), glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), vagus nerve (CN X), accessory nerve (CN XI), and hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
  • CRANIAL NERVES: types of nerves
    - sensory: Olfactory nerve (CN I), optic nerve (CN II), vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)
    - motor: Oculomotor nerve (CN III), trochlear nerve (CN IV), abducens nerve (CN VI), accessory nerve (CN XI), hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
    - mixed (both): trigeminal nerve (CN V), facial nerve (CN VII), glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), vagus nerve (CN X)
