Cards (3)
Comprehensives
introduced - everyone can go as it is based on mixed ability - used
catchment
areas.
Positive impacts:
More
equal
than having three different types of schools.
Creates
equality
and inclusivity.
There is
less
of a divide.
They are designed to cater for children of
mixed
abilities and there isn’t an entrance exam such as the 11+.
They are
larger
so there are more subjects and facilities available and are seen as cheaper to fund and run.
Catchment
areas meant that schools were only enrolling local students.
Negative impacts:
There were still some grammar schools which created a divide.
Not everyone achieves as they might not suit everyone.
There was setting and streaming within schools but it also created labelling and subcultures.
Academically able students were seen to be held back by the less able especially without setting and streaming.
Criticism that they accept lower standards.
There is a limited parental choice as students are expected to go to the nearest school in the area.
