  • What is the pathway of blood into the heart?
    1. Blood enters the heart by the vena cava (right side) and pulmonary vein (left side)
    2. Blood flows into the right and left atriums
    3. Muscles of the atria contract, pushing the blood into the ventricle
    4. Ventricles contract which pushes the blood out through the pulmonary artery (right side to lungs) and aorta (left side to body)
  • What are the three parts of the circulatory system?
    Blood
    Blood vessels
    Heart
  • On each side of the heart, the atrium and ventricle are separated by a valve, which prevents blood from flowing backwards.
  • The left ventricle has thicker walls.
    Why is this?
Blood leaving the left side of the heart goes on to circulate around the whole body, and so the make this happen the muscles have to have a lot of strength.
  • Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs?
    Pulmonary artery
  • Which blood vessel carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body?
    Aorta
  • Where are pacemaker cells found?
    In the right atrium
  • Which statement is always true regarding arteries?
They carry blood away from the heart
  • What statement is always true about veins?
They carry blood toward the heart
  • What do the coronary arteries do?
Supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients
