Understanding knowledge of genetics

Cards (9)

  • DNA sequencing is reading sections of DNA (or entire genomes) in order to reveal the base sequence of that section.
  • In NZ genetic screening is used to find out if individuals have the CDH1 gene of stomach cancer - Maori have a higher chance of having stomach cancer.
  • From DNA screening individuals can make informed choices of their future health.
  • Cystic fibrosis is the inability to produce fluids such as mucous, sweat and digestive secretions.
  • Cystic fibrosis is a recessive allele disease
  • Cystic fibrosis is caused by the CFTR gene
  • If you have the heterozygous genotype for cystic fibrosis as well as your partner, it is important to make sure to have an important decision on if you want to have biological children.
  • A blood or saliva sample is collected and the DNA is sequenced. Normal sequence chromatograms are compared with the sample chromatogram.
    • If a carrier of the gene is identified the patient can undergo regular checks for cancer or may choose to surgically remove the stomach.

  • Individuals with a family member with Cystic Fibrosis and their partner may choose to have their DNA sequenced to see if they are carriers of the mutated CFTR gene before having children. A blood or saliva sample is collected and the DNA is sequenced. Normal sequence chromatograms are compared with the sample chromatograms.
