computer models

• cognitive approach says there are similar ways in which humans and computers process information
• the cognitive approach uses the computer modelling to investigate information processing
• computer models are software simulations of internal mental processes
• cognitive psychologists develop theories about how info is processes in the mind, they can then program this into a computer to test if their theory is effective
• One of the earliest and most influential computer models in cognitive psychology was by Newell & Simon (1972),

  • looked at the processes involved in problem solving.
  • developed a computer program called the ‘General Problem Solver’. They started by asking people to solve problems whilst thinking aloud. They then used these verbal reports to decide what general strategy was used on each problem. Finally, they programmed the General Problem solver, to solve a wide range of problems
