    • The Russians were heavily defeated at Tannenburg and the massurian lanes
    • Over 1 mil soldiers were killed by the end of 1914
    • Many of these soldiers didn't even have a gun or boots, and blamed their officers, who didn't care
    • Many sources report that the army didn't even have access to first aid
  • On Russians at home:
    • Short on food and materials, which were being carried to the front line
    • Prices rose while factories closed, meaning more poverty and less jobs
    • No coal
