  • Literature is any written work that came from the Latin term littera meaning letters or written words. Literary genres offer diverse forms and styles for conveying ideas, emotions, and stories to readers, from poetry, prose, drama, fiction, to nonfiction.
  • POETRY a form of literary expression characterized by rhythmic language, vivid imagery, and condensed language.
  • POEM- end result of the process Types:
    Conventional Poem - follows a traditional meter and rhyme scheme.
    Unconventional - e.g., free verse, spoken poetry, social media poetry
  • PROSE is characterized by its expression in the art of everyday language (regular grammar) more natural expression and narrative development does not adhere to metrical structure, unlike poetry
  • DRAMA - Drama comes from the Greek word, dran, meaning to do or to act. usually written in script format uses minimal narration and fleshes out the story through characters' dialogue and actions

  • NONFICTION - based on facts, actual events, or real people. intends to inform
  • CREATIVE NONFICTION - encompasses texts about factual events that are not only for scholarly purposes. uses literary techniques
  • ILLUSTRATED NOVELS - stories through text and illustrated images with 50% of the narrative presented without words some illustrated novels may contain no text at all
  • DIGI FICTION Combines three media: book, movie/video, and internet websites.
  • GRAPHIC NOVELS - are story-driven and written in a style of a comic book drawn in a particularly Americanized graphic style and must be read from left to right
  • MANGA - almost always printed in black and white and must be read from right to left
  • DOODLE FICTION - incorporates doodle writing, drawing, and handwritten graphics in place of the traditional font to enhance the story, or to add humorous effects.
