Duration of Memory AO3

Cards (2)

  • -Peterson’s study consisted of artificial stimuli. The study wasn't completely irrelevant; we do sometimes try to remember fairly meaningless material - phone numbers, license plates. Even so, recalling consonant syllables doesnt reflect most everyday memory activities where what we’re trying to remember is meaningful- this means the study lacked external validlity.
  • +Bahrick’s study had high external validity due to using meaningful material. When studies on LTM were conducted with meaningless pictures to be remembered, recall rates were lower (Shepard). This suggests that Bahrick’s findings reflect a more real estimate of the duration of LTM.
