The two subdivisions of the Human Nervous System is Peripheral Nervous System and the Central Nervous System
The two main functions of the Nervous system are: To collect, process and respond to information in the environment and to co-ordinate the working of different cells and organs in the body
The CNS passes messages to and from the brain through nerves which are passed onto the PNS
The Peripheral nervous system is further divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous system
The Somatic Nervous System is responsible for carrying sensory and motor information to and from the spinal cord and receives information from the CNS
The autonomic nervous system governs vital organs such as breathing, heartrate, digestion and sexual arousal
The sympathetic nervous system is triggered when faced with threat and prepares the body for fight or flight
The Parasympathetic nervous system is activated once threat has passed and helps dampen stress response
