Segregation Acts

• 1913 Native Land Act meant blacks could only rent land in certain areas
• 1923 Urban Areas Act allowed town councils to segregate housing
• 1926 Mines and Works (Colour Bar) Act restricted certain skilled jobs to whites
• Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act

• 1950 Immorality Amendment Act banned sex between whites and non-whites; many disliked this act on both sides especially as it gave the police the right to enter people’s cars and homes at night without warning
• 1952 Native Laws Amendment Act meant blacks were banned from staying in white areas for more than 72 hours without a permit
• 1955 Transport companies could segregate on buses and other forms of public transport; oddly this cost many companies lots of money but they didn’t anyway
