  • Representational art
    Depict or describe a person, object, scene or situation. Examples are painting, sculpture, literature and theater arts.
  • Non-representational art

    Do not present identifiable objects or symbols. Examples are architecture and some musical pieces.
  • Subject
    Whatever is represented in a work of art. It has three levels of meaning interpretation: factual literal presentation, conventional-special meaning related to a culture or religion, subjective-personal intention of the artist understood only through his interpretation.
  • Functional/applied arts
    Arts designed to directly affect people. Examples are architecture, weaving, furniture-making, textile, and a few crafts.
  • Non-functional/fine arts
    Art concerned with the creation of objects of imagination for its own sake without relation to function or utility. Examples are painting, music, sculpture, literature and theater arts.

    • Colored pigments (in painting)
    • Any tangible thing such as stone, wood, metal, etc. (in sculpture)
