  • conformity: a change or alternation in someones behaviors due to group pressure
  • internalisation: when a person accepts the norms and values of a group without questioning them - public and private change of opinions
  • identification: publicly change opinions even if we don't privately agree
  • compliance: going along with others within a group, but privately sticking to the same opinion.
  • informational social influence: cognitive process of the need to be right
  • normative social influence: emotional process of the need to be liked. Done so by seeking social approval
  • strength of NSI: supporting study from Asch, pp's owned up to saying they didn't say the correct answer because they afraid of disapproval. But when writing their answers down, conformity decreased because there was no group pressure
  • strength of ISI: supporting studies from Lucas et al, when they didn't know the hard maths questions, they conformed in order to be 'right' as they were unclear on the correct answer.
