  • how does the landscape creates difficulties for people who want to use it ?
    • steep land means that it is harder to harvest and grow crops
    • Heavy rain can result in landslides which means roads and houses will be blocked and and damaged
    • Soil in these landscapes are thin and have poor organic content which means crops are cannot grow
    • Fewer industries and businesses set up in these areas because these area are difficult to access and trade will be more expensive

    sheep farming -
    • Grass is poor quality high up and therefore only suitable for rough grazing sheep
    • Sheep adapted to cold windy climate of mountain
    • Sheep need little attention and can roam free on hilltops
    farming crops -
    • grown in flatter valley floors where soils are richer.
    • Valleys provide shelter from winds for crops to grow

    • Pine forests often grown on steep valley sides in plantations because Land is so steep that farming is impossible as machines couldn't get up slopes.
    • Land is out of the way and as trees take 30 years to grow, can be left alone.
    • Soils on slopes are poor quality.  Pine trees can grow in soils that are thin and low in nutrients.
    • Pine trees are adapted to survive in cold snowy climates
    • The roots of trees help bind slopes together which prevent rock slides affecting settlements and roads in the valley.

    • it is in a remote location so less people will be against it.
    • There is also a v-shaped valley which has steep sides that act as a trap so no water can escape and cause flooding.
    • The dam is also going to be recharged because of small streams running in to from the mountains.
