Fight/flight response does not always explain effects of chronic stress
  • E + E
Levine (1997) highlighted the ‘freeze response’ to extreme stress, caused by activation of the parasympathetic NS.
Freezing is a defense mechanism characterised by a reduced heart rate and dissociation from the immediate environment.
Defensive Freezing often occurs when an individual is exposed to extreme threat (e.g. trauma), or when fight/flight is not viable.
    • This suggests humans are not limited to the fight or flight response to stress.
∴ Fight/Flight response lacks understanding, further research needed.
