  • Social Learning Theory: Cognitive Factors
The SLT recognises the importance of cognitive factors in learning by identifying meditational processes as learning directly through just modelling and imitation is an inadequate explanation. We store information about others behaviour and use it to make judgements. Bandura said that "learning would be laborious if we solely relied on our own information of behaviour". However, it has been criticised for underemphasising biological factors, as Bandura said that biological differences do influence behaviour however it is mainly the environment.
  • Social Learning Theory: Contrived Lab Studies
Bandura's research and evidence to support the SLT was gathered through lab studies which involved observations of young people in an unnatural, controlled environment. A bobo doll is supposed to be hit, so children may have been acting aggressively towards it because that's what is expected. Lacks real life application and explanation of how they behave in real life.
  • Social Learning Theory: Real World Application
The SLT explains cultural differences in behaviour. Aspects such as modelling and imitation explain how children learn. For example, the media explains how social norms are transmitted through cultures. The SLT provides understanding to a range of behaviours, such as the role of identity and gender roles.
