population

Cards (18)

  • Population - group of individuals, of the same species, occupying a particular space at the same time, sharing the same gene pool
  • Biological species concept

    1. must have the potential to interbreed
    2. must produce healthy, fertile offspring
  • demography - study of the vital statistics of a population and how they change over time
  • age = age distribution
  • sex = sex ratio
  • size = density, abundance, commonality or rarity
  • behavior = spatial or temporal distribution
  • birth = natality
  • death = mortality
  • reproduction = reproductive value
  • feeding = energy allocation
  • development = population growth
  • Density is the result of a dynamic interplay between processes that add individuals to a population and those that remove individual from it
  • natality - population process that add individual to a population
  • mortality - removes individual from the population (death and emmigration)
    1. life tables
    2. survivorship curve
    3. age structure and sex ratio pyramid
    1. Life tables – a record of the birth and death rates at different life stages
  • demographic factors: birth, death, immigration, emigration
