Strength of cognitive interview - Milne and Bull (2002) found combination of ReportEverything and ContextReinstatement produced better recall than standard police interview, suggesting cognitive interview improvement from standard police interview. Thus increasing validity of cognitive interview as it improves police interviews of EW accounts and results in accurate recall.
Strength of cognitive interview - Geiselman et al (1985) showed participants stimulated violent crimes, 48 hours later witnesses interviewed using cognitive interview, standard police interview or interview using hypnosis. CI elicited most accurate recall and can be used to enhance recall of witnesses better than other interview techniques. Thus most effective method increasing validity.
Limitation of cognitive interview - very time consuming, time needed to establish rapport with witness and allow them to relax. CI requires time for special training which many police forces have not been able to provide. CI may not be suitable in certain situations due to time constraints thus reducing overall effectiveness.
Limitation of cognitive interview - Kohnken et al (1999) carried meta-analysis of 55 studies and found 81% increase of correct information but also 61% increase of incorrect information when compared to standard police interview. CI may encourage witnesses to recall more false information. Therefore, CI produces incorrect information questioning accuracy of interview procedure in EWT.
