Approaches assumptions

    Cards (6)

    • Behaviourist theory assumptions

      1. We are all born with 'blank slates'
      2. We all at birth have the capacity to learn
      3. Focuses on observable behaviour (if I can't see it, it didn't happen)
      4. All behaviour is learned from the environment
    • Social learning theory assumptions

      1. Lots of behaviour is learned through experience
      2. Concerned with human rather than animal behaviour
      3. Learning occurs through observation and imitation of models
      4. Learning can occur through conditioning, but can also occur indirectly
    • Cognitive approach assumptions

      1. Internal mental processes are important features influencing human behaviour
      2. The human brain is like a computer
      3. People's problems often arise due to faulty or irrational thinking
      4. It ignores biology and genetics as an explanation for behaviour
    • Biological approach assumptions

      1. The mind lives in the brain
      2. Behaviour can be inherited
      3. All behaviour has a biological basis
    • Psychodynamic approach assumptions

      1. We have unconscious drives that dictate behaviour
      2. Childhood experiences dictate adult behaviour
      3. We have an id, ego and superego
    • Humanist approach assumptions

      1. Focuses on conscious experience, free will and discussing experiences rather than behaviour, determinism and scientific methodology.
      2. Focuses on topics that are meaningful for humans and emphasis how humans should strive for personal growth
