If you want to retell what someone has said, thought, or felt, you can use direct or indirect speech.
Direct and Indirect are typically introduced by verbs such as say, tell, admit, complain, explain, remind, reply, think, hope, offer, refuse, etc.
Quotation Marks (“ “): Punctuation marks are used to indicate that the text represents the exact words (direct speech) someone has spoken.
Take note that in indirect or reported speech we “report” what someone has said. We do not use their exact words, so we do not use quotation marks (“ ”).
