  • If you want to retell what someone has said, thought, or felt, you can use direct or indirect speech.
  • Direct and Indirect are typically introduced by verbs such as say, tell, admit, complain, explain, remind, reply, think, hope, offer, refuse, etc.
  • Quotation Marks (“ “): Punctuation marks are used to indicate that the text represents the exact words (direct speech) someone has spoken.
  • Take note that in indirect or reported speech we “report” what someone has said. We do not use their exact words, so we do not use quotation marks (“ ”).
